The never list, and where makers break ranks
These are the materials laser makers most often tell owners to keep out of the machine. The right-hand column is the part most lists leave out: maker pages that say the opposite.
| Material | Makers saying no (some or all jobs) | Makers listing it as workable (some job) |
|---|---|---|
| Coated carbon fiber | Full Spectrum Laser (FSL), Glowforge, xTool | none |
| Faux leather, pleather, leatherette | Boss Laser, Full Spectrum Laser (FSL), xTool | none |
| Fiberglass and epoxy | Full Spectrum Laser (FSL) | none |
| PVC and vinyl | Boss Laser, Epilog Laser, Full Spectrum Laser (FSL), Glowforge, xTool | Monport, xTool |
| Polycarbonate (Lexan) | Boss Laser, Full Spectrum Laser (FSL) | none |
| ABS plastic | Full Spectrum Laser (FSL), xTool | Boss Laser, xTool |
| HDPE and other polyethylene | Full Spectrum Laser (FSL), xTool | Monport |

PVC in detail
Six maker pages read on Nov 5, 2026 tell owners not to laser PVC or vinyl. Two maker blog pages list it as workable. Kerf Index quotes both and makes no call of its own.

Two maker blog pages list PVC as workable: xTool's July 2026 guide (fiber engraving) and Monport's January 2025 guide (diode engraving). xTool's own support article 363 says the opposite, and adds "To cut this material, please wear a gas mask or use an air purifier." Kerf Index shows the conflict and makes no call.
Epilog: "Materials, such as Kydex, contain PVC."
Unknown plastic
xTool support: Do not engrave or cut any unknown materials. Vaporization/melting of many materials, which include but are not limited to PVC and polycarbonate, may release harmful smoke.
